Special Announcement from IAHA President, Carolyn Metnick

Introducing IAHA’s New Executive Director – Karen Harris

On behalf of the IAHA Board of Directors, I am very pleased to announce that Karen Harris has assumed the role of Executive Director of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys.  A long-time IAHA member, Karen will bring a wealth of experience in health law, health policy, and the governance and operation of non-profit organizations like IAHA.

As you know, IAHA is an affiliate society of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association (IHA), and under IAHA’s Bylaws, IHA’s General Counsel also serves as the Executive Director of IAHA.  Karen joined IHA as Senior Vice President and General Counsel on March 1st.

Since 2013, Karen was a partner in the Chicago office of Saul Ewing, Arnstein & Lehr, LLP, a national full-service law firm that serves clients throughout the U.S. and internationally.  She previously served at the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law in Chicago.

Karen has served in numerous roles in the legal community, including the American Health Lawyers Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys, and the Black Women Lawyers Association. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.  She was named one of the “Most Influential Minority Lawyers in Chicago” in 2017 by Crain’s Chicago Business Custom Media and one of Chicago Business Journal’s “Women of Influence” in 2018.

Mark Deaton will remain with IHA as Senior Counsel during a transition period and will remain involved with IAHA during that time.

The IAHA Board and I are delighted to welcome Karen and look forward to continuing our long tradition of valuable service to our members under Karen’s leadership.

Carolyn Metnick
IAHA President
