Please read the following important information about the structure of the Program prior to submitting your application.

The IAHA Mentoring Program was started in 2013. The program is designed to expand a member’s network within the IAHA and offer continued professional development for all members.

The IAHA Mentoring Program offers two participation tracks – a CLE Track and a Non-CLE Track.

CLE Track

The CLE Track was developed by the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism (ILSCCP). The program is sponsored by IAHA and is approved by the ILSCCP.

The CLE Track provides eligible participants an opportunity to earn six (6) professional responsibility CLE credits. Newly-admitted attorneys may use this program to earn the six (6) hours of professional responsibility credits that are required as part of Basic Skills. If the program is used to satisfy the Basic Skills Professional Responsibility requirement, it does not have to be completed at the time the newly-admitted attorney is required to report compliance.

There is no fee to obtain the CLE credit.

Eligible Participants and Requirements:  

Mentors

  • Admitted to practice law in Illinois for not less than five years.
  • Registered as active and in good standing on IL ARDC Master Roll of Attorneys
  • Never suspended or disbarred from practice in any state or jurisdiction
  • No formal disciplinary complaint pending.

Mentees

  • Admitted to practice law in Illinois no more than four years prior to beginning the program OR passed the Illinois bar exam and awaiting formal admission to practice law in Illinois
  • Practicing or intend to practice law in Illinois
  • Completes the program within the first five years of practice

Mentors and mentees in the CLE Track must complete specific requirements established by the ILSCCP. IAHA will provide mentors and mentees various resources, including ILSCCP-developed materials, to assist them in meeting the ILSCCP requirements:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Attend an Orientation Session to begin the mentoring year;
  • Sign a Mentoring Agreement defining parameters for the year;
  • Develop an individualized Mentoring Plan at the outset of the year that identifies actions in designated ILSCCP professional responsibility CLE categories that the mentor and mentee will complete throughout the year;
  • Meet at least eight (8) times in-person;*
  • Attest in writing at the end of the year that they have completed the actions identified in the Mentoring Plan and that they have met at least eight (8) times in-person (or three (3) times in-person and five (5) times via video if applicable, see the Distance Mentoring Exception below) by the end of the mentoring year;
  • Apply for CLE credit at the end of the mentoring year.

*Available Distance Mentoring Exception
In certain circumstances, if mentoring pairs do not live within a commutable distance or if they demonstrate a compelling need, at the discretion of the IAHA Mentoring Program Administrator, they may be permitted to meet via video-assisted communication. At least three (3) of the eight meetings must be held in-person and five (5) may be held via video communication, such as Skype, FaceTime or videoconferencing.


Non-CLE Track

The Non-CLE Track provides participants who are not eligible for the CLE Track or do not wish to commit to completing the CLE Track requirements an opportunity to participate in the Program. Non-CLE Track participants are asked to commit at minimum one (1) hour per month to the Mentor/Mentee relationship.

On Mentoring

The program is designed to expand a member’s network within the IAHA and offer continued professional development for all members.

The IAHA Mentoring Program provides experienced attorneys, attorneys who are newly admitted or are newcomers to the practice of health law, and law students an opportunity to engage and learn from one another. The Program would like to recognize members who have taken advantage of this mentoring opportunity and highlight the value of their experience that they have shared. This month we're pleased to highlight Julie Letwat, Faegre Baker Daniels LLP (Mentor), and Catherine Gawron, a 2L at the University of Notre Dame (Mentee).

  1. What is one thing you've learned from your mentor/mentee that you would not have learned from another colleague?  
  2. Julie (Mentor)
    That knowing exactly what kind of law you want to practice and where you want to practice it is both a negative and a positive for law students. While having such focus is great, it can be difficult finding the right opportunities within such narrow criteria.
    Catherine (Mentee)
    Coming from outside of the area, I found it very valuable to speak with someone outside of my small circle in Chicago, and learn more about the legal community. As a mentee currently in law school, I joined the program to try and learn more about the Chicago legal market (of which I knew very little about, coming from Seattle) and get to know the community in the hopes of eventually working in Chicago after graduation.

    Julie was so helpful in explaining the firms that were operating in the healthcare field in Chicago, went over various career opportunities with me during my job search for 2L summer, and gave me frank advice that I don't think I could have received anywhere else. Her advice and guidance in researching the legal community was so important for my job search, I think was so helpful because of the unique position of her being my mentor.

     

  3. How has the Mentoring Program impacted your professional goals?
  4. Julie (Mentor)
    It has made me want to get to know more of my younger colleagues in the area and get more involved with IAHA in general.

     

     

    Catherine (Mentee)
    My mentor Julie was incredibly helpful during my job search for my 2L summer. I was able to speak to her about the firms I was considering in regards to my career goals, and she was helpful in giving advice as well as further suggestions for firms/career plans to look at to achieve my goals (such as firms I hadn't considered, or people that I should try to connect with). Julie's guidance and support helped me find a summer associate position that matched my career goals and personality extremely well, for which I am very thankful.

     

  5. Has the program met or exceed your expectations? Why or why not?
  6. Julie (Mentor)
    Met and exceeded. It was great to meet and get to know my mentee who had such a passion already for healthcare law and knew exactly what she wanted to do.
    Catherine (Mentee)
    This program exceeded my expectations, and I am planning on participating again. The networking opportunities that Julie assisted me with were helpful, but more importantly, I enjoyed getting to know someone in the Chicago legal community and building a relationship with her. Julie was wonderful to get to know as a member of the legal community, and I feel confident that Julie and I will stay in touch after the program ends.

     

  7. What is something you have taken away from the Program that has surprised you?
  8. Julie (Mentor)
    Watching my mentee go through the job search process and learning the vast differences in Chicago firms’ health care practices and capabilities as well as recruiting styles!
    Catherine (Mentee)
    I loved getting to know how connected the healthcare community in Chicago is, and how close so many people who work in the same field are, across firms and organizations. The program pleasantly surprised by being so much more than professional organization, but showing me how the close-knit the healthcare community is in Chicago.

     

  9. Has the time commitment been manageable? Why or why not?
  10. Julie (Mentor)
    Very. We met in person several times and communicated often via e-mail.
    Catherine (Mentee)
    The commitment was completely manageable, as Julie and I opted to do the non-CLE program. Julie and I met frequently over the summer, and tapered off once I returned to my campus (University of Notre Dame Law). This worked for both of our schedules very well. I found the commitment very easy to meet, and I believe Julie felt similarly.
